Dropping Points from Winning Positions: A Troubling Statistics

A STATISTICS QUOTE from WeAintGotNoHistory reads: “[Chelsea] has now dropped more more points from winning positions than any other team in the league save Queens Park Rangers…” A very troubling trend of this season.

[Update: I was going to leave it as a shocking statistics but I have to know how many points we dropped and in which games it happened. So, I took a peek into it. A bit more detail after the jump.]

Starting with THAT 3-5 Loss (Points Dropped: -3)

It all started with the infamous 3-5 loss to Arsenal at home. Lampard's 14th minute header gave Chelsea the lead but you all know what happened afterwards. Two late goals from Robin van Persie made sure that Chelsea didn't even get a point out of this game.

Gomez Scored Late (Points Dropped: -2)

We thought Sturridge's second half strike was enough to get all 3 points at the DW Stadium but Gomez equalized at the 88th minutes to make sure that it wasn't the case. This 1-1 draw against Wigan was the second time in the league that Chelsea dropped points from the winning position.

Dempsey's Damning Late Christmas Present (Points Dropped: -2)

It was the day after Christmas and Mata's 47th minute strike put us all in holiday mood. But Dempsey played the Grinch and stole 2 points off of Chelsea by putting away Ruiz's cross from close range in this 1-1 draw.

Even Villa Beat Us (Pointes Dropped: -3)

Drogba scored his 150th goal for Chelsea and we are all very happy and thankful for it. But you know you are in trouble when Ireland and Petrov are scoring goals against you. Chelsea lost 3-1, two of those goals coming within the last 10 minutes of the game.

How to Blow A 3-0 Lead at Home (Points Dropped: -2)

Chelsea were in dreamland leading Manchester United at home by 3-0 after 50 minutes but two Rooney penalties and a late Hernandez goal brought us all back down to earth where we were having a nightmare season.

Fresh Wounds at the Etihad (Points Dropped: -3)

Just happened. Chelsea took the lead with a lucky Cahill goal after being totally outplayed by City. But the Citizens came back to grab all three points thanks to goals from Aguero and Nasri.

In Sum

So, Chelsea has dropped a total of 15 points from winning positions. This happened in 6 games -- 4 of which were played at Stamford Bridge (remember when we were like unbeatable at home?). Furthermore, late goals play a huge roles in these games. In the last 10 minutes of these 6 games, Chelsea conceded 7 goals. If these games would have ended at the 80th minute, Chelsea would only have dropped 6 points instead of 15 ( i.e. Chelsea 3-3 Arsenal; Wigan 0-1 Chelsea; Chelsea 1-1 Fulham; Chelsea 1-1 Aston Villa; Chelsea 3-2 Man United; Man City 1-1 Chelsea). These numbers do not paint a pretty picture.

Carefree, wherever you may be...
