Andre Villas-Boas Appointed As New Boss

Chelsea FC has finally signed Andre Villas-Boas as the new manager on a 3 year deal. Chelsea says,
"Andre was the outstanding candidate for the job. He is one of the most talented young managers in football today and has already achieved much in a relatively short space of time. His ambition, drive and determination matches that of Chelsea and we are confident Andre's leadership of the team will result in greater successes in major domestic and European competitions."
Chelsea has paid the £13.3m compensation to release the Portuguese coach from his Porto contract, with Villas-Boas succeeding Carlo Ancelotti.

Both former Chelsea boss John Hollins and former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin said that signing Villas-Boas was a "calculated gamble". And I couldn't agree more. It is a gamble because he is very young (he is as old as Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba) and has not yet proven in the highest stage of the game. Sure he has won the league title in Portugal and the Europa League titles but they are not major domestic title (like those in England, Italy and Spain) or the Champions League title.

Yet, it is a calculated move because he has been around managing for about half of his life, learning from the likes of Sir Bobby Robson and The Special One. He has also been at Chelsea before and is familiar with the personals around Chelsea FC. He was the Chelsea scout responsible for assessing opposition teams throughout Jose Mourinho's time in charge of the team between the summer of 2004 and September 2007. His duty as a scout also means that he is also familiar with a lot of the teams in the league and that he can make good assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. Plus, he speaks both English and Portuguese fluently. This is going to be helpful since the majority of the squad speaks English and at least 6 of the players speaks Portuguese.

I for one is very excited about this move. It is definitely a risk but I think it will bring excitement to the club and its prospect, just like when Jose Mourinho was first signed. I hope for the sake of both the club and Villas-Boas that the coming year would be a successful year. I think we definitely have a talented manager on our hand and hopefully he will fulfill his potential with us and bring home the trophies once again.
